Prison Architect 2 Delayed Indefinitely

Prison Architect 2 Delayed Indefinitely

I waited maybe a bit to long to talk about this, because this game is pretty close to my heart, but I’ve come to terms with the idea that perhaps Paradox Interactive has lost what little mojo they had left.

In a recent announcement, Paradox Interactive and Kokku (more of that later) have delayed the release of Prison Architect 2 indefinitely. Originally slated for a September 3rd launch, the game now requires more time to enhance “performance and content”. The “developers” aim to ensure the sequel meets the “high standards of the franchise”, introducing new features like 3D environments, multi-floors, and a new behavior system. All pre-orders will be refunded, with pre-order bonus content being bundled into the base game.

For context, after the game was delayed the first time, Double Eleven, the lead studio behind the game, couldn’t strike a deal with Paradox to actually make it playable, and separated likely due to the many issues found with the game and no money or willingness to fix them. Kokku has taken over fully now, and this indefinite delay should speak to the shape of the game during the transition period.

While Kokku is not a new studio, this might be the largest game they have taken on full development of. Most of their project showcase is a Roblox game, artwork or partial development like console porting or bug fixing.

I realize this might sound like one giant complaint, and it is, partially. I would much rather have the game be complete and function properly than a bug filled cash grab. But I also wonder: how did we get here in the first place?

Games are complicated, expensive, and demand from consumers grows larger and larger every year. Fans of the game will wait with excitement, and I can only hope the game delivers on the hype.
